Information leads me to believe that Visor owners will not be able to update the OS. Will we just weep as Palm Pilot owners continually enjoy keeping their handheld up-to-date with improvements to the Palm OS?

Post Subject: Yes, OS is upgradable

OS upgrades can be stored in RAM. From what I have read, the 'flash memory' upgrade was not used by 3Com until this recent generation of Palm devices. Previous Palms stored OS upgrades in ram. Handspring should have no problem implementing upgrades.

Post Subject: Sorry, OS is *not* upgradable on a Handspring

I attended MacWorld in San Francisco a month ago, and spent considerable time visiting the Handspring booth (proudly showing off my blue Handspring Visor Deluxe while there). After one presentation, the Handspring rep did a Q&A with the audience, and I asked this very question: "Can you upgrade the Palm OS on a Handspring Visor?" The answer was: "No, the current models of the Visors store the OS in the ROM so you cannot upgrade the OS at this time." The implication was that they might change this in the future -- but if you have a Visor *NOW*, you will NOT be able to upgr

Post Subject: I believe it is upgradable

Before I decided to purchase the Visor, I read that the OS is upgradable. Just because someone at Handspring says it isn't doesn't mean it isn't. I called HP for support on a Win printer that used to print in DOS. They told me it doesn't print in DOS. I told them the book says it does and he said it was a misprint. I told him there are two pages covering it and he said it is still a misprint. I hung up and called back and got someone else. This guy told me that it does print in DOS. I called for a printer part the other day and the company told me they can't look up part numbers. I called back 5 min. later and got someone else and he looked up the part number for me. Don't believe everything you hear.

How have you heard this. Not being able to upgrade the OS would mean there is something significantly different about the Visor. Might be worth it to read the licensing agreement between Palm and Handspring, they must have touched on this issue. Palm has alot more to gain by opening their architecture than closing it, remember Apple.

Subject: Visor Purchase vs. Palm?

I've read some of the comments posted about the Visor and problems that are showingup. My Palm Professional (two years old) is on it's last nine holes. I like what Visor advertises but am weary about this new product. I am looking to replace my Palm. Any suggestions
